Hats From the Past

Royal Hats 41 years to March 3, 1980 when Queen Sofia and Queen Beatrix wore the utmost of contrasting winter hats! That veiled ecru headband is a memorable one.

This Week’s Extras

On Wednesday, Crown Princess Kiko wore her inky blue wide bandeau for Emperor Naruhito’s scaled-down birthday celebration.

Princess Beatrix in a black sinamay hat with upturned brim today for the 80th anniversary of the World War II battle in the Java Sea.

The following new millinery designs (and sinamay lampshade designs made using millinery techniques!) caught my eye this week (see the comments for more):

Dutch Queens At Award and Book Launch

Last Wednesday, Princess Beatrix attended the Jantje Beton award ceremony for most play-friendly city in Culemborg. For this event, where she presented a statue award that she had made, she repeated a beigey pink straw hat with a pyramid crown and triple rolled bumper brim.

The sheen and bias placement of the brim beautifully frame Beatrix’s face, softening the angular lines of the crown, while  metallic silver threads in the sinamay weave give the loveliest bit of sparkle. The pyramid crown shape is never going to be a favourite for me but the rest of this design works really well.

Also last Thursday, Queen Máxima visited Museum Beeld en Geluid to receive the first copy of the photo book “Stichting Haags Verhaal” by photographer Piet Gispen. She repeated her her midnight blue felt fedora with Petersham ribbon hatband tied in a side bow.

The extended brim on this design gives it a chic informality that seemed to suit this event and paired well with her grey ensemble.

Yesterday, Zara Tindall wore a navy felt Justine Bradley-Hill designed trilby with leather flower and cut feather trim (she has worn a very similar design before but this one was new). Today, she wore a cranberry wrapped bandeau headpiece by Camilla Rose Millinery. Both looks styled by Annie Miall.

During the month of November,  I’m turning the weekly “Caught My Eye” feature over to you! What millinery designs have caught your eyes over the past week?
