Favourite Repeated Royal Hat of 2018

Last year, several hundred hats stepped out on royal heads for the second, third, (or twelfth!) times. Each month, you picked a favourite from these repeatedly worn designs to assemble a list of ten stunning semi-finalists for the year. You have voted, dearest readers, and now we crown a winner in this race for Favourite Repeated Royal Hat Design of 2018:

Congratulations to British milliner Jane Taylor, who created this winning saucer hat, and to the other three milliners who designed these beautiful runners up. I can’t say I expected to see one of Princess Anne’s hats included in this list but such is the wonderful world of royal hat watching- there are surprises around every corner!

Dutch Queen Opens Exhibition In Heerlen

Queen Máxima was in Heerlen today to open a new exhibition at the Schunk Museum. For this opening, she wore a new burgundy fedora described by the designer as “made of melusine felt in a pink mink color and trimmed with a fabric band matching her dress”.

The relaxed brim makes the design decidedly less formal, something that wouldn’t work for all outings but fits well with an art exhibition opening such as this. And let’s be honest- the hat is a supporting element to the statement necklace and its relative quietness makes the ensemble work. It’s not my favourite hat in Máxima’s millinery closet but it tops a good look on her here.

Dutch Queen Names Vessel

On Friday, Queen Máxima was in Rotterdam to attend the naming ceremony of the dredger VOX Amalia. For this event, she repeated her avocado felt hat with flat crown and wide, cartwheel brim trimmed with Petersham ribbon brim binding, hatband, and back bow.

We saw this hat less than a month ago, paired with the same hounds tooth check coat. Friday’s outing also included the chartreuse silk dress worn with this hat at its debut…. while I want the combination of green-ish items to work, I’m afraid the mix of shades and sheens is a bit to unconnected for the ensemble to read harmonious for me. Styling aside, the shape and scale this a great hat for Máxima

Dutch Royals Welcome African Leader

On Monday, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima welcomed the President of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca and his wife Lígia Dia, on a visit to Amsterdam. For their official welcome, Queen Máxima wore a new cuffed calot hat in the same sapphire blue wool as her coat.

The vibrant colour is great on Máxima and the punchy combination with her emerald dress and jewels is a good one. The close fitting calot seems to be a complimentary silhouette to the boxy coat- and its the boxy coat that lets the ensemble down, preventing the look from appearing truly polished. Recut the coat and maybe we’ll have something here.

Dutch Queen Opens New Charity Headquarters

Queen Máxima opened a new environmentally sustainable office building for a group of Charity Lotteries in Amsterdam yesterday. For this visit, she wore a new toque hat in the same saffron yellow and navy silk ikat print as her blouse.

There’s lots going on here to balance the ensemble: the reversed pattern of the silk print on the skirt,  the small-ish scale of the hat, the open funnel neck of the blouse, the high contrast yellow and navy colour scheme. It’s a very coordinated look to be sure, but I think it works well and I admire Máxima for stepping out in a colour as strong as this yellow- not something we often see on a royal hat.
