Ascot 2022 Day 1: Princess Anne, Timothy Laurence & Peter Phillips

Princess Anne and her family enjoyed the races today. She repeated a brown sinamay waved disc hat trimmed with ivory and chocolate layered sinamay bows and ivory feathers.

While the hat pairs well with Anne’s embroidered coat, I’m neither a fan of the shape or the trim. It also is so like some of her other hats, I’m very surprised not to find any previous outings (I think it’s new!).  Was it the best addition to Anne’s millinery wardrobe? I’m not so sure. In the gallery below, you’ll see her husband, Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence, joined the carriage procession in his black silk top hat.

Order of the Garter Service 2022

Today saw the return of the Most Noble Order of the Garter Ceremony at St. George’s Chapel. Held every year on the Monday before Royal Ascot, the The Order of the Garter is the oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry in Britain, established by King Edward III nearly 700 years ago as a personal gift of thanks from the sovereign for those who have held public office, made a significant contribution to national life or been of personal service. After lunch at Windsor Castle, the twenty-four Knights and Ladies of the order process down the hill to St. George’s Chapel, each dressed in elaborate regalia, velvet robes and Tudor-style hats with tall white ostrich plumes. It’s quite a spectacle.

The Prince of Wales, Princess Royal, Earl of Wessex, Duke of Cambridge, Duke of Gloucester, Duke of York, Duke of Kent, and Princess Alexandra are all royal members of the order.

They were joined for the first time by the Duchess of Cornwall, who was appointed to the order today.

Several royal spouses attended the service as well. The Duchess of Cambridge wore a new hat described by the designer as a “Beautiful teardrop hat. Woven straw base. Adorned with an array of silk roses, rosebuds, leaves, and silk abaca bow.”

The beret has a lovely shape and this periwinkle blue shade is just splendid. Kate often uses the coat dress + percher hat formula and while I’m always up for experimentation, I can’t argue that it remains a great look on her.

The Countess of Wessex repeated an ecru straw, oval saucer hat with sharp sidesweep trimmed with white, cream and ecru feathers placed on both sides of the raised brim.

Photos today hint at a lovely sparkling sheen in the straw, which I suspect brings the hat to life when seen in person. I’m still on the fence about the feather placement, which has never seemed quite right to me.

This is always a lovely kick-off to Ascot week and after a two-year hiatus, it’s so great to see the full event return. What do you think of the hats today at Windsor?

British Royals Attend Epsom Derby and Palace Party

Several Members of the British royal family attended the Epsom Races today. Princess Anne represented her mother at this event in a pale blue sinamay saucer hat. The hat is trimmed with a sinamay bow and feathers on the top and  pair of blue applique leaves placed around the back of the raised rim.

We’ve not seen this hat since its debut six years ago and while it’s not her most vibrant, it’s lovely to see again. I just wish we had a closeup view of the back!

Zara Tindall wore a periwinkle blue waved sinamay disc trimmed with silk flowers and leaves and a brighter blue silk abaca looped bow. Her husband Mike wore his black antique silk top hat.

It’s another stellar hat for Zara this weekend, the slightly larger scale than her usual beret perchers suiting her well. The colour is magnificent a

Platinum Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving Part 2

We continue coverage of today’s Platinum Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving with the Countess of Wessex, who wore a barely-blush sinamay teardrop beret percher. The hat is trimmed with a hand-rolled pleated organdy ruffle dyed in ombre shades of pink and curled pink quills.

It’s a shape we’ve seen Sophie wear many times but what really works here is the subtle shades of blush and pink in both the sinamay of the hat and ruffle trim. At a quick glance, it’s not noticeable (especially in sunlit photos) but it’s certainly there. This custom dyeing gives such life and dimension to the piece.

Lady Louise Windsor wore a bandeau headpiece with peaked center ridge entirely covered in seed beads, pearls and sequins in different shades of pink.

The shape elevates this piece from basic headband to bandeau headpiece, as does this texture and colour from the beads, pearls and sequins! It’s a wonderfully light and youthful design that suits the occasion and its wearer, perfectly.

Princess Anne repeated her muted teal sinamay hat with rounded crown and high, sidesweeping brim embellished with a darker teal slim silk hatband and curling, multi-looped straw bow interspersed with trimmed feathers.

It’s such a beautiful hat, the different shades of teal adding just the right contrast. Since its last outing, three deep burgundy feathers have been added, tying the hat to the burgundy threads woven into the silk shantung of her coat and dress.

Zara Tindall stood out in a bright pink shirt dress with pale mauve accessories and a purple hat. The parasisal beret is trimmed with a twisting bow in the same material, silk hydrangea blossoms and a tuft of purple veil.

The hat, darling by itself, is elevated by the incredibly striking styling of the ensemble. The pink dress pulls these shades out of the hat’s flowers and while one might expect the hat and dress hues to compete, they balance beautifully. I think the overall look, with it’s unexpected combination of pieces, is absolutely brilliant.

Platinum Jubilee: Trooping the Colour Part 2

The Prince of Wales, Duke of Cambridge and Princess Royal all took part in Trooping the Colour today.

The Prince of Wales’ hat (traditionally made of bearskin, these hats are now made of synthetic faux fur) holds the green and white striped feather plume of the Welsh Guards, of which he is Colonel. Prince William’s blue plume relates to his role of Colonel of the Irish Guards. Princess Anne is Colonel of the Blues and Royals and wore the distinctive black bicorne hat of this regiment with upright red feather plume.

The Duchess of Cornwall repeated her pale aqua blue hat with parabuntal straw domed crown and sinamay sidesweeping brim. The hat is decorated with a padded silk hatband and knotted bow at the side, secured with a blue covered button.

What to say- it’s a beautiful scale, shape and colour on Camilla, with just the right balance of embellishment, drama and presence. It also pairs so well with her ribbon coat.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a layered straw saucer hat in crisp navy and white straw. The hat is simply trimmed with a thick white cut quill that appears to hover over the design.

We don’t often see such high contrast on Kate’s hats and it’s so great to see this bolder design on her today. The scale is spot on and with her coat dress, forms an overall look that is wonderfully chic.
