Princess Alexandra repeated a grey straw hat by Rachel Trevor Morgan on Wednesday for a visit to Leeds Castle in Kent to celebrate its 900th anniversary
On Thursday, Princess Benedikte attended the opening of the Jacob A. Riis Museum the Southwest Jutland city of Ribe in her repeated navy textured straw picture hat with curving, sideweeping brim.

Queen Mathilde and Princess Elisabeth were in Africa this week, visiting several UNICEF projects. After meeting with the Maasai in Kenya, they came away gifted with names “Namayiana” (blessed one) and “Nasieku” (first born) and these traditional headdresses

On Friday, Queen Margrethe presented a military award, repeating her new terra cotta orange straw hat with navy hatband. Yesterday, she took part in events commemorating the 75th anniversary of the execution of a Danish resistance group in her refined pink straw hat with white trim.
Princess Hisako and Princess Tsuguko took part in American Independence Day celebrations today at the Tokyo American Club. Princess Hisako wore a biscuit straw hat with very short, rolled brim while Princess Tsuguko topped her floral dress with a lovely wider brimmed hat trimmed with flowers.

And two hats that made me catch my breath- first is this natural straw beret percher with exquisitely ethereal handmade silk iris flowers and leaves by Leicester-based milliner Guilia Mio

and second is this stunning turquoise design with parasisal crown, two-toned double layer sinamay brim, hand rolled flying bow and turquoise guipure lace applique by Dutch milliner Wies Mauduit. Truly- this hat caught my eye before I realized who made it!

A possible answer to widespread questions about Princess Haya’s absence at Royal Ascot. Whatever is going on in this situation, I’m sure you all join me in wishing her and her children safety and peace.

Danish Queen Arrives At Summer Home

Queen Margrethe arrived in Aarhus Harbour yesterday aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog, en route to her annual summer residence at Marselisborg Castle. For this trip, she wore a new hat in dark peachy orange straw. The hat follows a simple shape with rounded crown that extends to a modest length brim and is trimmed with a navy hatband tied in a side bow.

There’s much to like here- the hat’s simple shape is enlivened with an interesting colour scheme and beautifully turned angles on the brim (they play so well against the jacket’s lapels). It’s impeccably finished and tops an ensemble that certainly coordinates, but uses colour blocking and different textures to its benefit. This shade of orange is a brave one to wear and I think it’s handled really well in this ensemble. ​

Here are some of the royal hats we missed during Ascot- we’ll look at the hats worn today for National Day in Luxembourg in a separate post, later tomorrow.

Last Sunday, Queen Margrethe attended a church service in Tallin, Estonia, in the jaunty boater hat with navy textured fabric crown and cream straw brim by Mathilde Thoe Førster she debuted last month. Love the jaunty angle!
On Monday, June 17, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attended the 109th Japan Academy Prize ceremony in Taito. Empress Masako wore a white hat with short brim and wide hatband embellished with the same decorative braid as is on the lapels of her matching jacket. Interestingly, the hatband has been turned upside down since its last outing. The Akishino family joined the emperor and empress to host a tea party at the Imperial Palace for prize winners. Crown Princess Kiko and Princess Mako repeated aqua and white bumper hats while and Princess Kako repeated a blue silk covered bowler with bow on the side


On Wednesday (the day after her spectacular debut at Ascot), Queen Máxima officially opened the renovated Military Hospital in Utrecht. She repeated her raspberry straw picture hat with mushroom brim by Fabienne Delvigne.

It’s already Monday in Japan- on this day, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attend the Japan Art Academy award ceremony in Tokyo. The Empress is looking so polished these days- today she topped a beautifully tailored ice blue suit with a matching short brimmed hat with multi layered silk organza hatband.
We saw a number rather unattractive and unflattering felt top hats at Royal Ascot this week. Since the silk used to make the gleaming antique top hats we all admire (thanks ChicagoChuck!) is no longer produced, what do you think of Stephen Jones’ summery, sustainable and smartly stylish alternative in straw?! This is a hat that greatly intrigues me.

Danish Royals Celebrate National Flag

According to legend, the Danish flag, Dannebrog, fell from the sky during the Battle of Volmerslaget in Estonia on June 15,  1219, providing Danish soldiers, led by King Valdemar II, strength to persevere to victory. Today, on the  800th anniversary of this event, members of the Danish royal family took part in celebrations for this popular, well-loved national symbol. Queen Margrethe arrived in Tallin, Estonia, aboard the royal yacht Dannebrog this morning in her repeated red bumper hat with side bow in the same navy and red painterly print as her dress.

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary attended celebrations in Vordingborg, Denmark’s medieval capital and location of King Valdemar II’s castle (now just remains). The Crown Princess topped her red dress with a repeated vertical saucer hat in natural straw studded with diamanté, trimmed with large silk roses and flying coque feathers.

This has always been a great hat on Mary- the scale is really good and the hat’s neural colour scheme comes to life paired with vibrant items such as this red dress. The mix of neutral and vibrant items from head to toe (make sure you also peek at her shoes!) makes for a polished ensemble that feels very suited to the celebratory nature of today’s events.

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie attended celebrations at City Hall in Copenhagen. Princess Marie wore a new hat in a pale pink textured straw with cartwheel brim and shallow, flat crown. The design is simply trimmed with a striped natural straw bow on the side. The hat is clearly designed to sit on an angle on the head (evidenced by a base beneath the crown that sits on the head) and this angle really makes this hat work. It’s a charming design on Princess Marie.

Queen Margrethe attended the 100th Anniversary of the first Danish church abroad in Herning yesterday, repeating the vibrant blue brimless hat with twisted bow we saw her debut last fall to open parliament


The new Imperial emperor and empress undertook their first events outside Tokyo today, attending the National Tree Planting Festival in Owariasahi. For this event, Empress Masako wore a pistachio green suit and streamlined white hat with curved brim and a a layered green hatband. It’s a good look on her, isn’t it?
