Ascot 2022 Day 1: Zara & Mike Tindall

Zara and Mike Tindall attended the races today, Mike in his antique black silk top hat and Zara in a cream button percher with pastel tulle pompom trim.

The whimsical hat is an unexpected pairing for this dress, but that’s what makes it work so well. Pair the hat with a floral ensemble and it would be difficult to keep the look from falling to twee. Here, the hues pull together while the edginess of the dress balances the frothy, fun hat. I’ll admit it’s not something I would wear but it’s so interesting to admire and Zara deserves kudos for carrying it off so flawlessly.

British Royals Attend Epsom Derby and Palace Party

Several Members of the British royal family attended the Epsom Races today. Princess Anne represented her mother at this event in a pale blue sinamay saucer hat. The hat is trimmed with a sinamay bow and feathers on the top and  pair of blue applique leaves placed around the back of the raised rim.

We’ve not seen this hat since its debut six years ago and while it’s not her most vibrant, it’s lovely to see again. I just wish we had a closeup view of the back!

Zara Tindall wore a periwinkle blue waved sinamay disc trimmed with silk flowers and leaves and a brighter blue silk abaca looped bow. Her husband Mike wore his black antique silk top hat.

It’s another stellar hat for Zara this weekend, the slightly larger scale than her usual beret perchers suiting her well. The colour is magnificent a

The Platinum Party at the palace began with another fantastic surprise from Her Majesty. Now we all know what she keeps in her handbag!

The only headwear sported by royal family members at the concert are a pair of sweet headbands on Savannah and Isla Phillips.

Platinum Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving Part 2

We continue coverage of today’s Platinum Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving with the Countess of Wessex, who wore a barely-blush sinamay teardrop beret percher. The hat is trimmed with a hand-rolled pleated organdy ruffle dyed in ombre shades of pink and curled pink quills.

It’s a shape we’ve seen Sophie wear many times but what really works here is the subtle shades of blush and pink in both the sinamay of the hat and ruffle trim. At a quick glance, it’s not noticeable (especially in sunlit photos) but it’s certainly there. This custom dyeing gives such life and dimension to the piece.

Lady Louise Windsor wore a bandeau headpiece with peaked center ridge entirely covered in seed beads, pearls and sequins in different shades of pink.

The shape elevates this piece from basic headband to bandeau headpiece, as does this texture and colour from the beads, pearls and sequins! It’s a wonderfully light and youthful design that suits the occasion and its wearer, perfectly.

Princess Anne repeated her muted teal sinamay hat with rounded crown and high, sidesweeping brim embellished with a darker teal slim silk hatband and curling, multi-looped straw bow interspersed with trimmed feathers.

It’s such a beautiful hat, the different shades of teal adding just the right contrast. Since its last outing, three deep burgundy feathers have been added, tying the hat to the burgundy threads woven into the silk shantung of her coat and dress.

Zara Tindall stood out in a bright pink shirt dress with pale mauve accessories and a purple hat. The parasisal beret is trimmed with a twisting bow in the same material, silk hydrangea blossoms and a tuft of purple veil.

The hat, darling by itself, is elevated by the incredibly striking styling of the ensemble. The pink dress pulls these shades out of the hat’s flowers and while one might expect the hat and dress hues to compete, they balance beautifully. I think the overall look, with it’s unexpected combination of pieces, is absolutely brilliant.

Platinum Jubilee: Trooping the Colour Part 3

In addition to the Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence, the Queen was joined on the balcony of Buckingham Palace today by other working members of the Royal Family.

The Earl of Wessex wore the full ceremonial uniform of his role of Colonel of The London Guards, along with his Silver, Gold, Diamond and Platinum Jubilee medals. The Countess of Wessex wore a new pink and ivory hat described by the designer as “a bespoke hand dyed, two tone style disc, trimmed with bows.”

The saucer shape suits Sophie well and the transparent base of pink windowpane sinamay gives a lovely lightness to the design. It’s the bows that don’t work for me. I think they might be too haphazard on the otherwise streamlined design.

Lady Louise Windsor wore a hat from her mother’s closet that Sophie wore to Trooping the Colour in 2009 (the fist year that Louise also appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony!). The natural straw cloche follows angular lines with a sloped crown and extended brim on one side and is trimmed with a blush sinamay upside-down bow with twisting tails.

It’s a great hat for Louise, the modern shape and whimsically youthful trim feeling as contemporary as it did over a decade ago. I’m a fan of hats sharing hats between wearers and this was a lovely surprise today.

Princess Alexandra repeated her teal felt picture hat. The design is trimmed with a wide hatband and purple and teal burnt feathers anchored with a jeweled multi-loop bow. I adore the unexpected addition of purple feathers to the trim, which give such lift and just enough contrast.

The Duchess of Gloucester wore a new hat! Yes, it is another navy straw beret but the shape is slightly different than her other navy straw beret, and this design is overlaid in a navy net veil which gives it a slight variation in texture. She embellished the hat further with a rock crystal brooch on the side. The Duke repeated his black silk top hat.

A number of other members of the royal family were spectators at this event and were snapped or shared photos in hats.

Princess Beatrice looks to have repeated her “Quilted Pearly Headband” from Zara, adding the brand’s “Pearl Bead Headband” in front for added oomph. If so, it works!

British Royals Attend Easter Sunday Service

Members of the British royal family gathered at Windsor Castle yesterday to attend Easter Sunday service at St. George’s Chapel.

The Duchess of Cambridge repeated a denim blue crepe pleated bandeau circle headpiece. The design is ruched around the back with waved bow tails. The pleated texture of the bandeau works so well in contrast with the smooth lines of the coat dress, as do the different shades of blue paired in the same ensemble.
