Queen Máxima Celebrates Utrecht Neighbourhood

Queen Máxima was in Utrecht today to attend the 20th anniversary of the Leidsche Rijn neighbourhood in the city. For this event, she repeated her dark green felt hat with high sidesweeping brim, simply trimmed with a Petersham ribbon hatband and side bow.

At this hat’s debut in January, it was less smoothly shaped than we see it today- I’m glad to see the base of the upswept brim has been reshaped as the hat is much the better for it. Felt hats are heavy by the very nature of their material and this one plays beautifully against the modern lace neckline of Máxima’s dress. Lace dresses and felt hats don’t often work but this pairing is a good one.

Favourite New Royal Hat: July & August

Overseas visits, an engagement announcement, a christening, a major anniversary, a national day celebration, a wedding, and two Scottish residencies brought us more than the usual number of new royal hats over the summer. During July and August, twelve new royal hats stood out, based on your comments, as particularly successful at their debut. It’s now time to take another look at this beautiful millinery dozen and choose your favourite.

This group also contains diversity of colour, scale and shape with perchers, sidesweeping pictures, kettle brims, a ringed disc, a bandeau and an unresolved millinery mystery (I still don’t know if #11 is a renovated hat but since this was its first outing in this form, I’m including it as new!) in the group. As always, the winner of this poll will be put forward as the first semi-finalist for Readers’ Favourite New Royal Hat of 2018.

Favourite Repeated Royal Hat: July & August

July and August saw so many wonderful hats this year that I’m going to change things up and face them off without September’s offerings (we’ll combine those with October hats at the end of the month). Between anniversaries, a christenings, a national day celebration and other engagements, there were 11 new royal hats worn over the summer which, based on your comments, were widely admired. As those of us in the Northern Hemisphere break out our fall wardrobes, let’s take a last look back at our favourite repeated summer royal hats and choose our favourite.

Swedish Royals Open Annual Church Meeting

Crown Princess Victoria joined her father this morning for the opening of the Church of Sweden’s annual General Synod meeting. For this event, she wore a blush pink silk floral fascinator tucked beside her chignon. It’s a go-to look for Victoria that fits well for an event where no one else would be wearing a hat.

Danish Opening of Parliament 2018

The Danish Royal Family gathered together today in Copenhagen for the official opening of Parliament. This annual event is often occasion to debut new hats and today, there were three new beauties! Queen Margrethe led her family in a smart new ensemble in cornflower blue. Covered in the same silk crepe as her dress and tailored jacke, the matching brimless hat is simply trimmed with a stitched twist bow on the side. While I think I’d prefer the hat more if it was more of a calot on the back of Margrethe’s head instead of this helmet-like style, its a go-to shape for her and the colour is wonderful. We’ll undoubtedly see the ensemble many times again but I think it’s a good addition to her wardrobe.

Crown Princess Mary also wore a new hat, a black felt bumper design with piped crown and small feather spray on the side. I adore the scale and placement, which makes the hat look like a rounded pillbox from some angles. We’ve not seen Princess Mary in many bumper hats (I think this is the first) and this one is also a great addition to her millinery closet.

Princess Marie wore the only repeated hat of the day, her navy calot with large side bow. This remains a great hat for petite Marie, whose hair styled to one side was a great counterpoint to the hats large bow.

Princess Benedikte also wore a new hat, a wide brimmed chocolate felt design with simply shaped, rounded crown, trimmed with a felt hatband and autumnal-hued spray of feathers on the side. The combination of hat, chocolate wrap and orange dress is a good one and the ensemble has that effortless elegance we often associate with Princess Benedikte.
