Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to this day in 1989, twenty-nine years ago, and a wide brimmed hat I don’t recall seeing before. The late Princess of Wales donned this shallow crowned design in deep purple, with a coordinating Catherine Walker coat, for a visit to St.Bride’s Church in London.

Dutch Queen Names Vessel

On Friday, Queen Máxima was in Rotterdam to attend the naming ceremony of the dredger VOX Amalia. For this event, she repeated her avocado felt hat with flat crown and wide, cartwheel brim trimmed with Petersham ribbon brim binding, hatband, and back bow.

We saw this hat less than a month ago, paired with the same hounds tooth check coat. Friday’s outing also included the chartreuse silk dress worn with this hat at its debut…. while I want the combination of green-ish items to work, I’m afraid the mix of shades and sheens is a bit to unconnected for the ensemble to read harmonious for me. Styling aside, the shape and scale this a great hat for Máxima

This Week’s Extras

Last Sunday, Her Majesty Margaretha, Custodian of the Romanian Crown, attended a Thanksgiving service dedicated to Romania at the Queen’s Chapel of Savoy in London. Margaretha wore an ecru straw button based percher trimmed with purple and cream feathers and a cream veil. Back on December 5, Margaretha and her sisters marked a year anniversary of their late father’s passing.
From Haga Palace, these charming snaps of Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar in traditional dress (and headdresses) to celebrate St. Lucia day on Thursday
Princess Josephine in a bowed headband with her grandmother on Thursday at a Christiansborg Castle for all Danish royal staff. The advent elves in the attic of Dronningen Palace also found some of the late Prince Henrik’s hats this week.
Princess Hisako and Princess Akiko in more casual hats Friday at the Saitama Imperial Wild Duck Preserve
The Duke of Cambridge stood in for his grandmother on Friday for the Sovereign’s Parade at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.

Delicate butterfly trim on this straw sidesweep from British milliner Bundle McLaren
Deep purple velvet felt triangular percher with bow from East Village Hats in New York
Black straw wide brimmed sidesweep trimmed in burgundy flowers from UK brand Rebecca Couture Millinery
For our gents, a Philip Treacy exaggerated black Homberg with very handsome pleated hatband
Creamy-gold percher with veil and gold flowers from Australian brand Felicity Northeast Millinery
Black wide brimmed hat with red under-brim roses by London-based Turkish milliner Merve Bayindir
And the loveliest, summery new designs from London milliner Vivien Sheriff –  a pink lattice brimmed picture hat trimmed in pink lace and a fuchsia straw button percher trimmed with soaring rainbow feathers!

Lovely holiday portrait of Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, shared by their mum.
Kensington Palace and Clarence House shared this year’s Christmas greetings from the Sussexes (taken at their wedding), the Cambridge family and the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall (taken in their garden at Clarence House).

Queen And Duke of York Visit Lincoln’s Inn

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of York visited the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn yesterday in London. For this visit, she repeated her vibrant orchid purple hat with domed crown trimmed with a pair of large red feathers.

We’ve seen this hat enough to quickly admire its punchy colour scheme and subtle brim shape (it’s shorter ’round the back). The photos today, however, give a closer look at the workmanship- there is not a pucker or stitch to be seen. Sometimes, beauty is in what is not seen and the perfectly sewn brim edging on this piece is testament to this.
