Queen Letizia topped her acqua caped coat with a curved headpiece in almond sinamay swathed in dotted tulle veil in the same hue.

The quirky ‘s’ shape is unique and the scale works well for petite Letizia. Millinery statements don’t have to be magenta and wide brimmed (see below!) to pack real style punch and I really like the creative unexpectedness of this one, not to mention its lovely construction. What’s curious, however, is that based on the milliner’s photo below, the design was created to be worn on the left side, curving around the face. Letizia wore it on the right side, curved around the side of her head. I prefer her placement… but kudos to a design with flexibility.

Queen Máxima repeated a wide brimmed picture hat in deep pink parabuntal straw with sharply upfolded ‘slice’ brim and a raspberry ribbon hatband. We all know this go-to shape on Máxima and the vibrant colour elevates the drama. Monochrome ensembles in such a bright colour can be risky but the different textures on each element give enough contrast to keep the look from being overly one note.  Any time a royal matches their lipstick to their hat, I am there for it!

The Coronation: Royal Guests

As we have come to expect at such landmark royal events, royal guests at King Charles III’s coronation represented nations from around the globe. Those who wore hats to this event were as follows:

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain: Queen Letizia wore the largest hat we’ve seen her in to date, a design in natural hued straw with mushroom brim and button crown, draped in an overlay of widely woven (I think it’s vintage?) bubblegum pink net veil. It’s a dramatic design for Letizia and so wonderful to see her experimenting with new millinery shapes.

Spanish Monarchs Begin State Visit To Sweden

King Felipe and Queen Letizia arrived in Stockholm today to kick off a two-day state visit to Sweden.

Embed from Getty Images

For their arrival, Queen Letizia wore an orange draped silk abacca bandeau headpiece trimmed with feather flowers, dyed a slightly darker shade and place on one side of the design.

Embed from Getty Images

The colour is fantastic on the Spanish queen as is the scale. The flower placement is also interesting, framing the face instead of on top of the design, leaving the drape of the silk abaca visible. I have some quibbles about the silk abaca drape (lovelier in the video below than in photographs today) and the seasonal clash between summery headpiece and wintry cape but as Letizia does not always wear hats or headpieces for state visits, it was fantastic to see her in something today.

Queen Silvia repeated a bumper hat in vibrant magenta felt, worn on the back of her head in the style of a calot. The hat is trimmed with a felt cutout leaf on one side that anchors a small bunch of wispy feathers that lay across the front of the design and cascade off the other side. The saturated colour is so great on Silvia and the hat combines with the matching coat to create a polished but punchy ensemble (especially standing next to Queen Letizia in that luscious orange!).
