Ascot Hats: Zara Tindall

We wrap up Ascot week with the final of five looks back at royals and their past Ascot hats. Since we opened this week with Zara Tindall, it feels fitting that we end with her as well. Here are all the hats she has worn to the races over the years:

Zara is often credited with having one of the bolder royal millinery styles yet, interestingly,  this retrospective shows a signature style she has settled into during past past five years. It’s a great one, for certain, but it’s less experimental than somehow I thought it might be.

Which of Zara’s Ascot hats stand out to you most?

Royal Ascot 2020 At Home: Day 4

We continue today with the fourth day of racing at Ascot Racecourse. While we won’t be seeing any new hats on the queen, to get today’s discussion started we have one of her go-to milliners, Rachel Trevor Morgan, in two beautiful saucer hat designs. I’ll take both, please!

Ascot Hats: Peter Phillips

While the colourful ladies’ hats at Ascot get most attention, the event just wouldn’t be the same if men did not wear top hats. Reader (and Royal Hats’ revered expert on top hats) Chicago Chuck noticed Peter Philips in a silk topper years ago that no longer seems to be worn and suggested a retrospective on his hats to investigate further. Today, therefore, we look at all of the top hats Peter has worn to Royal Ascot:

Since 2013, Peter has worn the same black top hat (note the grosgrain pattern on the hatband and the distinct brim shape with wider binding). I’m now curious about the whereabouts of the 2012 grey hat….
What do you notice in Peter’s evolution of Ascot looks?

There’s so much here to admire, both in terms of individual looks and overall millinery bravado. The Philip Treacy fuchsia slice in 2012 is one of my favourite royal hats of all time, the white straw slice with black lace trim by Philip Treacy in 2014 is a masterpiece and the navy lace trimmed Juliette Botterill hat in 2017 is just plain pretty.  Princess Haya is not usually included in conversations about the bravest royal hat wearers which is a shame- there are numerous looks here that few other royals would even dare try pulling off. Granted, not all are successful but my goodness, her commitment to each look is so solid that even the less successful looks are still noteworthy.  Her absence at last year’s races was strongly felt, especially after learning the dire circumstances behind it. I hope things are resolved for her in a way that enables her to confidently attend Royal Ascot again, as it’s just not the same without her.
What do you notice about Princess Haya’s millinery style evolution? Which of her Royal Ascot hats stand out most to you?
